Artist Timothy Cole displays his paintings for a creativity conference at First Baptist, Lapeer, Mich.

At First Baptist Church of Lapeer, Michigan, a Creativity and the Christian Conference is “an environment where Christians can discuss the convergence of their theology and their art and enjoy community with other artists who love God,” says conference director Lydia Scheps.

At the daylong conference June 8, now in its third year, artists and authors set up tables to display and sell their work, including books, paintings, and stonework.

One artist was Timothy Cole, who spoke on “Art as Service and Worship.” Five additional speakers shared their thoughts on a variety of topics, including “How to Be a Successful Christian Author,” “How to Write a Song,” and “Fearfully and Wonderfully Made.”

Attendees had also been invited to bring an instrument if they played one, and near the end of the day, everyone sang and played together as they learned a new hymn.

The church hopes to encourage more Christian artists as it hosts conferences like this one in the future.
